They are popular for their ability to induce positive feelings, and some involve only minimal player interaction. Games come in many forms, from competitive sports to board games.
The Roberts and Sutton-Smith theory of games suggests that they act as learning tools and as a form of internal conflict resolution. In societies where children and adults are forced to obey authority figures, games that involve strategy allow players to manipulate objects without having to bear responsibility. Similarly, games that require luck or strategy are considered “games of chance.”
In a variety of different forms, players can choose to use physical tools, such as pawns on a board, play money, or an intangible object, such as points scored. Some games are not playable without these tools, however, such as hide-and-seek and tag. Different settings can influence gameplay, and some games deliberately change their rules. The rules of a game often include a timekeeping system, player rights and responsibilities, preset boundaries, and the goals of each player.
The concept of a game is not new. Games have been a part of culture and technology since the earliest days of computing. The first commercial systems were known for their games, and some were designed with educational values in mind. For example, a tennis game dominated a Visitor’s Day at Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1958. Maze Wars became popular at Xerox PARC. It is difficult to categorize video games, but they are part of the fabric of our society.
